We're all looking for Elijah.
Who is Elijah?
In both Jewish and Christian tradition, Elijah is the one who comes before the Messiah arrives to remake the world. Our world sorely needs remaking—spiritually, morally, politically, economically, environmentally—and I could go on.
Despair is cheap—and quite understandable, given the gravity of our situation (and no, I'm not just talking about the current Administration in Washington, though it is certainly part of the problem). But I confess to being an irremediable optimist. Or, more precisely, a short-terms pessimist and a long-term optimist. However dire things may look at any given moment, I can't help seeing in the midst of the chaos the birth pangs of a new world. Both my spiritual and political outlook set me to looking for Elijah—and, yes, finding him, even if deeply disguised.
Through this blog, I'm inviting you to join me in this search. The content of this blog will likely seem quite eclectic, even as I am a person of a whole pallet of spiritual, political, and other commitments and identities—but what will hold it all together is the hope and struggle for a new world being born.
One facet of this is my novel Speaker for the God, a somewhat revisionist and even transgressional telling of the life of the biblical prophet Jeremiah, to be available soon for preorder.
But I'm out to share with you much more than a book. I want you share with you a journey whose contours, even now, I'm just discovering.
I hope you'll come with me.
